Klavier Music Association was founded in the ACT in 1989 by Brian Marchant and Wilfrid Holland, two Canberra people very well-known as keyboard enthusiasts, who were respectively the first President and Vice-President. From its inception Klavier was an important enterprise as until that time there was very little local opportunity for competent adult players of keyboard instruments to perform in front of a supportive audience. Over the years Klavier has consolidated this objective, and to this day continues to provide friendly support for adults performing keyboard music whether it be solo or with other musicians.
In the main performing members are dedicated - and sometimes eminent - pianists, who have a lifelong interest in playing; but Klavier includes organists, harpsichordists, carillonneurs, accordionists and other players among its ranks, and in addition a number of tertiary music students have been helped along in their careers. Players and listeners come together for regular Sunday Socials which consist of a generous hour of music followed by afternoon tea, usually on the fourth Sunday of every month from March to November. As well, Student Concerts for pupils of members are held twice a year in May and October. Annually the Association publishes four or five Leading Note newsletters reviewing the Sunday Socials; and it also sponsors one of the Open Piano Solo sections at the National Eisteddfod. At present there are about 45 members of Klavier. Since September 2004 Mrs Marlena Jeffery has graciously been the Patron of the Association. The current President and Vice-President are Mrs Felicity Fullagar and Mrs Jennifer Rowland. Mrs Barbara Goodman is Secretary; Mrs Jan Tuite, Treasurer; Mr Andrew Fraser, Editor; and Mrs Linda Adriaanse, Mr David Franks, Mrs Suzanne Hewitt, Dr Robert Schmidli and Dr Trevor Roach are Committee Members. Klavier is assisted in various ways. A tribute must be paid to those who generously host the Sunday Socials, to those who provide refreshments, and to the writers of Reports of the Sunday Socials. Klavier is most grateful indeed for all this support and acknowledges that without it the Association would not be able to continue Return to home page |
