Klavier Music Association Inc.

Patron - His Excellency Mr Michael Bryce AM AE
An association for people who enjoy piano and other keyboard music

What is Klavier?

The Klavier Music Association began in Canberra in 1989 to provide opportunities for adult keyboard players to perform to fellow music-lovers. Over the years it has become recognised as an organisation which encourages quality performances in front of an appreciative audience.

Klavier musicians perform in salon-style concerts of around one hour, on such instruments as the piano, pipe organ, harpsichord and electronic keyboard. They also join with players of other instruments in ensembles. Pieces are of varying lengths.

Klavier is also an association for those who love to listen to music. The contribution of these members is their support and encouragement of the performers.

Membership subscription

The annual subscription is $30 per member. Pensioners, full-time students under 25 and additional family members pay the reduced rate of $25.

The subscription year begins on 1 April. Anyone joining after 1 September need pay only half the annual fee for their first membership year.

Activities and benefits

Klavier's main activity is the holding of regular concerts called Socials, usually on the fourth Sunday of the month from March to November. Socials take place in a variety of venues, usually members' homes. At times they occur in noteworthy places, such as Government House, churches or outlying properties. These concerts commence at 3.00pm sharp. They are followed by afternoon tea, to which members contribute. This time enables members and friends to socialise and to discuss musical items with the performers.

Socials are free of charge to members. Guests are asked to make a paper note donation.

Klavier publishes a newsletter called Leading Note. It includes reviews of Sunday Socials, other information about the Association and items of musical interest.

Klavier hosts student concerts twice each year in May and October. These allow young performers to gain confidence in a non-competitive environment.

Klavier also sponsors or promotes other musical activities in Canberra.
